My Small Yet Functional and Organized Home Office

Last fall I painted and reorganized my home office to make it work better for me. I haven’t had a chance to share this updated space with you yet so today’s the day. My office has gone through quite a few different configurations over the past 10 years and so far this new one seems to really be working out for me. I hope you like taking a look at my organized home office. But first let’s take a look at what it looked like before.

*I get commissions for purchases made through links in this post.*

This is what my office space looked like 10 years ago when we first moved into this house. More details can be found on this post HERE.

Then a few years later it got a little upgrade with a new chair and paper organization. You can read more about this command center HERE.

And below is what it looks like now. We painted the walls Benjamin Moore Gray Owl. It doesn’t look too different from the previous color in these pictures but it definitely has more of a grey hue now rather than a peachy/pink. And it just feels so clean and fresh.

My Organized Home Office

The layout with the desk right near the door may seem strange to some of you. At least it did to my family! They feel like they are coming into a receptionist’s office whenever they come talk to me while I’m working. I ask them if they’d like to make an appointment, ha! But there are a couple of reasons I put it there.

First, I like my desk to face the door so my crazy teenager can’t creep up behind me to scare me. If you have teens you know what I’m talking about! Second, right outside my office window is the neighbor’s house and their dining room window. I don’t want to see them while I’m working and I don’t want them seeing me (I like to keep the curtains open for light). The position of my desk right where it is now keeps that from happening. Always do what works best for YOU.

It’s not a large room and I also have quite a large Armoire in there taking up space. Letting go of this big storage Armoire, that doubles as a gift closet, is not an option though. It’s just so super functional and that’s what matters most to me. Here’s a peek inside. You’ll also notice that none of the furniture really matches and it’s all ages old too. The Armoire is over 25 years old, the desk is about 15 years old and the white bookcase is at least 10 years old. And it all works perfectly fine to help keep my life in order. Thank goodness for that. I’m very grateful to have a home office to call my own.

This white bookcase keeps my camera equipment tucked away in the brown baskets. You’ll find some of my favorite organizing magazines above that along with some of my favorite organizing books in the wire basket on top. Containing items in bins keeps like items together and prevents them from spreading out all over the place.

I got the ORGANIZE bin from Winners. It holds, in small zippered labelled bags, various charging cords.

You can see my sweet Pixie girl there beside my desk. This Raskog cart, that I lovingly call Pixie, is so helpful for giving me a little extra storage space for my desk necessities. This is essential for keeping my desk less cluttered which in turn makes me more productive. Plus I can easily move Pixie around if I want to work in other areas of the house.

My planners sit at the ready on Pixie’s top shelf 🙂

I love me a Sharpie!

This table on the back wall I purchased second hand off FB Marketplace many years ago. I call it my “conference table”. It folds up for more table space and has two stools underneath if needed. I usually just keep the table folded out as it acts as my working table for ongoing projects.

The shelf on the wall is new from Winners. This adorable flower pen in a pot was a gift from my middle son that he purchased off Etsy. I keep it in my Pioneer Woman bowl because why not? Isn’t it cute?!

And of course I had to put my own book, Clutter Rehab (affiliate link), on display. Can you believe it’s been 10 years since I wrote it? Wow how time flies! Who thinks I should write another?

Finally on the window wall I put two very inexpensive metal shelves side by side to provide all kinds of storage. From receipt storage to baskets of notebooks and extra school supplies, it all fits here and is within my arms reach which is lovely. I also have my shredder tucked to the side of the shelves and my printer right behind my desk. The file holder on the top right holds my working files for tax information, business expenses and blog information.

I love using a clear canister from Walmart for my Washi tape storage.

In this picture you’ll get a glimpse of the closet in the corner. I blogged all about the organization of this closet HERE if you are interested.

It still looks the same!

So as you can see I pack in a lot of storage into this small organized home office. I know not everyone will have a dedicated home office space to use but I hope you can take a few ideas away from this post to maybe carve out a nook or closet for your own. If you would like me to expand on any individual area as to what I’ve got stored there, just let me know in the comments. I didn’t want to make this post too long and I wasn’t sure if the interest would be there.

Remember to take some time to organize this weekend!
